I Spit On Your Grave aka Day of The Woman

Meir Zarchi: A Fearless Voice in Independent Cinema

I Spit on Your Grave (1978) was born from a harrowing real-life experience. In the early 1970s, Meir Zarchi and his daughter came to the aid of a woman who had been brutally assaulted in a New York City park. Though they rushed her to safety and reported the crime, Zarchi was deeply shaken by the indifference and mishandling he witnessed from authorities. That moment left a lasting impression—and became the emotional catalyst for a film that would challenge audiences and provoke global debate.

Zarchi discusses this pivotal event in his son’s documentary Growing Up With I Spit On Your Grave, revealing how the film became a raw, unflinching response to injustice. It gave voice to survivors and forced viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about trauma, survival, and retribution.

A fearless visionary, Zarchi reshaped the boundaries of independent cinema. His groundbreaking debut spawned a franchise of six films, including I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu (2019), which reunited him with original star Camille Keaton and Jamie Bernadette as Jennifer Hills daughter. With bold storytelling and uncompromising honesty, Zarchi’s work continues to inspire filmmakers to challenge norms and speak truth through art.
